Asian Infl uence
Interest in American barbering is
growing globally. In response,
the Wahl Education and Artistic
Team (W.E.A.T.) went to China
and Russia last fall to provide
education on this hot topic.
"There's huge interest there in
[many aspects of] American
culture such as barbering,
skateboarding, coffee shops
and fashion. They're hungry
for what they call 'hip-hop
style' barbershops," says Jose
Barba, one of the W.E.A.T.
members who taught classes
while the team was in China.
Barba and fellow team
members Christina Goree
and Rick Morin brought back
fascinating insights from their
travels. "Some of the stylists
were amazed at how I was able to complete entire haircuts using only Wahl clippers,"
says Morin, who demonstrated heavy fading techniques. "Most of them use shears for
all their haircuts."
The team also learned a few things from their colleagues on the other side of the globe.
"One trend I'd like to see evolve in the U.S. is a cool twist on conservative cuts," says
Goree, who held a master class at InterCHARM (intercharm.ru), one of Russia's largest
beauty shows, held annually in Moscow
