10 I M A N I FA L L 2 0 1 7 to the point Growing Pains Being a kid is rough. The world is so big and you know so little. As you grow into a teen, it really doesn't get any easier. At that point, you're trying to fi gure what's cool and how to fi t in without even knowing who you are yourself. (Plus, those hormones!) But then something happens—usually around 20 years old, give or take. Maybe it's a fi rst job with real responsibility, a backpacking trip around Europe or even something as simple as going to a restaurant or movie by yourself. Whatever it is, it's at that moment when you suddenly gain a jolt of confi dence and a real sense of self—and that sets the tone for who you will be as an adult. While the developmental years are full of fl ux, one thing is certain: Kids, boys in particular, need stability and people that can help them through this tumultuous EDITOR'S NOTE time. Certainly parents and teachers are the highest on the list, but barbers and stylists can also fi ll that role. It's true! Think about how much your adult clients share with you. Many argue that you not only cut, color and style hair, but also offer emotional support—therapy, if you will—to those same clients. That moral support, offered at a young age, could help kids through the diffi cult years, landing you a client for life. If you haven't fi gured it out already, this issue is all about catering to all ages, from boys to men. It starts with our adorable cover model, 7-year-old Mason Smith, winner of the Sport Clips cutest kid contest. Check out the behind the scenes on page 12. Many barbers say they became interested in this industry because of their own experiences at the barbershop as kids—so don't overlook this important and impressionable segment of the market. It could be your opportunity to give back. Speaking of growing up, I'm sure avid MAN readers have noticed a number of different faces on this page over the last few issues. When building any new endeavor, even a magazine, there are sometimes growing pains.
