International Beauty Show marked its 70th anniversary in February with three days of education, networking, entertainment and competitions. Highlighting the barbering category was the show's legendary Barber Battle and the highly anticipated Andis Total Look Competition for barbers. Bronner Bros.' Barber Battle was launched over a decade ago, and has become one of the most popular highlights of the show, wherein each competitor presents a 30-minute show that presents their work in a theatrical context that includes music and dancing. February's Battle saw four barbers competing for the top prize of $10,000, which was ultimately presented to Sipp the Surgeon, owner of The Art of Barbering—offi cial barbershop of the Dallas Cowboys—in Grand Prairie, Texas. Sipp's award- winning theme infused politics and social messages with hip-hop culture. Andis Total Look Competition featured 26 of the top barbers from across the U.S., who were judged on technical execution of styles, originality, suitability and head contour. Competitors were asked to complete their haircuts in 30 minutes using the Andis ProAlloy Clipper and GTX T-Outliner Trimmer. "The Andis Total Look Competition challenges some of the best barbers in the industry to tap into their creativity and pull together not just an innovative and well executed haircut, but also a total fashion look," says Andis educator and past winner Eric Cheek. First place went to Johnnie Akons of Legacy Cutz in Chicago, for his re-creation of a jazz-era look. Jason Chapman of Above Average Barber Shop in Fort Wayne, Indiana, took second place and third place was awarded to Samuel Simpson of Strictly Skillz Barbershop in Hollis, New York. All of the winners took home cash prizes, product and a trophy from Bronner Bros., and were given free passes to its next show this August (see page 49 for more info). Attracting more than 60,000 beauty industry professionals, manufacturers and cosmetology students annually, Bronner Bros.' trade shows are considered the premier platform for global trends in the $500 billion multicultural beauty and style market. Says show director James Bronner, "As we celebrate 70 years, we are grateful to all who have shared in this journey and look forward to ushering in the next generation of excellence in beauty."
