14 I M A N I P R E M I E R E 2 0 1 6 to the point Men's Grooming: It's a Thing Ever since we decided to publish a magazine dedicated to the men's grooming industry, I've been fi elding questions from family and friends about what is actually meant by "men's grooming." My personal favorite is, "Men's grooming? Is that even 'a thing?'" I generally respond by sharing a few signifi cant statistics, such as the $6.5 billion in U.S. men's grooming sales, and $21.4 billion in global men's grooming sales, projected for 2016.* But we didn't base the decision to launch MAN: The Business of Men's Grooming solely on statistics. Thanks to 45 years of covering all sectors of the professional beauty industry, we've developed a pretty strong network of insiders, experts and, most importantly, readers who work on the front lines of professional beauty services and retailing. And what we are hearing, time and again, is that men's grooming is likely the fastest- growing sector in our industry today. Why now? We know that changing social norms are helping to expand the traditional view of what is "manly." Today's guys can enjoy more freedom of self-expression in the way they dress and have their hair and beard styled.
